Shepherds at the Birth of Jesus
Why were shepherds the first people to find out about the birth of Jesus? At that time in human history, shepherds were generally seen as having low or little value by other people. As the Scriptures reveal, God’s ways are not always like our ways. What an amazing way they found out about the Advent of the Messiah! (See Luke’s Gospel: Luke 2:8-20.)
This is only the second time in the whole Bible that a group of angels, rather than one angel, had appeared to people. This powerfully demonstrates that God had a very important message to give to these shepherds: “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-12)
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, remember the special role God gave the shepherds.
In addition to this special role in the birth of Immanuel, God consistly uses shepherds as an analogy and as a model for His leaders. For that reason, It is one of the seven Biblical leadership elements we highlight in the LMC.
Some of you have heard Dr. David Cummings present the talk on Shepherding. Many have not. During the USA LMC in November 2017, I recorded David giving this talk, and I include it hear for you to enjoy. It is about 30 minutes long. Grab your favorite Christmas beverage and enjoy this time with David.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
